Q. Who are the ministers of the Church?
A. The ministers of the Church are lay persons, bishops, priests, and deacons.
Q. What is the ministry of the laity?
A. The ministry of lay persons is to represent Christ and his Church; to bear witness to him wherever they may be; and, according to the gifts given them, to carry on Christ's work of reconciliation in the world; and to
take their place in the life, worship, and governance of the Church.
Q. Through whom does the church carry out its mission?
A. The church carries out its mission through the ministry of all its members.
In the back of the Book of Common Prayer, on page 845 we are told what our church believes about God, Son and Holy Spirit. It also spells out pretty much who we are and what we are called to do as members and as children of our loving God.
I have always been interested in the answer to the first question above. The ministers are listed and you will notice who is first; the laity. You.
It happens at baptism, where we are all, laity and clergy alike, baptized into the ministry of the church.
And, that is why, you continually hear me say, “We are all in this together.”
