When this man was in court about to be released after all those years, there were 9 other men in court as well. They are all men who were exonerated by DNA evidence after being wrongly imprisoned. They show up in court whenever someone who has been wrongly imprisoned is freed. They just spontaneously started doing this. No 501(c) 3 agency was formed; no support group or letter writing campaign. Just people who know what it’s like, showing up.
That’s what church is all about. Showing up. We can get caught up sometimes in programs and committees and structures that are intended to make our life together work more smoothly. These are important things that support our life as a community; but we can get so busy in these that we forget to show up in each other’s lives.
Sometimes we think there is more to it than that. Sometimes there is more. We want to say the right thing, do the right thing, and find the right solution for those who hurt. But sometimes presence is the only thing that’s really helpful. Someone at your elbow. Someone at your back.
In some situations, words won’t serve. Only presence will help.
One basic tenet of Christianity is simply showing up—in each other’s lives and in the life of God. Just
show up. Nothing fancy. Just set with God awhile. Just be a little bit present to him. God doesn’t have to take extraordinary measures to show up in your life, of course, because he’s always there.
So for this moment and for all our times in this faith community - thanks for showing up!
